Charles takes his horses to New York for the big race of the year, bringing his British guests with him. Charles is surprised by the reception that he receives when his horse, Blitz, trots out onto the field for the first qualification race. Blitz and Eclipse race against the best horses in America. Blitz not only astonishes the crowd, but he also sets a record in the process. Charles and Judith return to Philadelphia and attend the grand opening of the new brewery. Charles receives an alarming telegram from Ghost. Charles’ businesses in Vallejo and San Francisco have attracted the attention of gambler Michael McDonald, a crime lord out of Chicago. Charles has created an enemy, and the enemy is not only insane, but he is also a Chicago Crime Lord with a small army of assassins. Mac McDonald is being forced out of Chicago and is looking to set up a business where he will not be harassed by the law and the other Crime Lords of Chicago. He likes the look of Charles’ businesses and the racehorses on Ghost’s ranch. Mac decides to begin eliminating Charles’ family and friends until Charles agrees to sign over all property to him. Charles travels to Chicago, is arrested, finds that the Judge is crooked, and lands in jail, where plans are made to kill him.
