Charles and Judith take Brett and Sun Bird to the horse races in Louisville. Charles’ filly, Artemis, turns impressive times, and several people try to buy her, growing angry when Charles refuses to put a price on her. Some minor trouble erupts in Louisville when two men attempt to rob Charles’ old friend, Vance Clausen, and Charles is accused of starting the problem and could face disbarment from horse racing by the racing committee. Charles takes Brett on a road trip, and they run into a bit of trouble along the way. Brett is impressed with the ranches and businesses that Charles has created. Brett likens tent city to a military encampment. Brett proves himself worthy by the time they return to Philadelphia. Brett returns to the Fort and is still unsure what he will do when he leaves. The pressure is on Brett to resign his commission or go with Custer and the 7th Cavalry to force the Indians onto a reservation.
