Charles takes Caleb to Denver on his way home, and the doctors check Caleb over before allowing him to travel to Philadelphia. While in Denver, Charles visits Federal Judge Moore and purchases the Nevada ranches that had belonged to Norman Guffy. Charles has his jockeys bring the Thoroughbreds to Philadelphia in preparation for the Belmont Stakes, hoping Wind Fire can earn the coveted Triple Crown. Charles discovers that the lumber for the new hotel is being stolen by a mobster and used to build the mobster’s boat. One of the gangsters hires a known killer to kill Charles, and Charles soon learns that the Mayor, City Manager, Sheriff, and Judges are all on the gangster’s payroll. Charles realizes that, due to the badlands mission, the trouble in Nevada, and horse racing, he has been neglecting his other businesses, and Russ Rivers joins him as Charles travels the country in search of a permanent career for Russ.
