Charles travels to Vallejo to meet his half-brother and returns to Philadelphia with him. Charles’s travels take him to England. While in England, he meets an unemployed French winemaker. He gives Charles an idea for a new line of wine and how to find the right grapes for the job. The journey takes Charles, David, Bud, and his new French employee to France and Italy to buy the exceptional grapes. Charles finds out that David has a true love he left behind in China, and they go on a trip to China so David can reunite with her. After returning to Philadelphia from his trip to China, Horatio tells Charles that a man and his two sons are planning to kill him and his family so they can take control of the railroad. Charles and two of Horatio’s associates are dispatched to northern New York State to eliminate these men before they can strike. David insists on going with Charles to protect him. David volunteers to go without hesitation. David’s willingness to help pleases Charles.
