Hunt’s adventure finds Hunt and the men tracking a band of bandits that are the remnants of a band of cutthroats that have ravaged the ports of Seattle for years. With the law hot on their tails, they have crossed Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, and now Colorado. The gang has attracted other bandits who have joined them, and soon they are of formidable size, even for the Cavalry Fort Lewis unit stationed in Durango, which is called upon to help Hunt and the men. Horse and his bride are expecting their first child, and they are fighting over the baby’s name. Their fighting has bothered others in Denver and has reached the point where Hunt has had to intervene to end public hostility and calm Horse’s Navajo wife, Nascha. Nascha’s temper flares, and she begins carrying a hunting knife and threatens Horse and any female whom he talks to. Nascha has difficulty understanding what people say to her, which angers her even more. Gray Wolf travels to the Navaho camp and asks her father, Chief Hok’ee, to come to Denver to talk with her to save Horse’s marriage.
