Hunt and the family return from Salt Lake City, and one of Hunt’s men returns from the Marshal Academy with three classmates who will join Ty in Salt Lake City at the new Utah marshal office. One new graduate irritates Hunt, and after an exchange of words, Hunt rips the badge from his shirt and fires him. A fight breaks out, and Hunt leaves him lying in the mud. The boy’s father turns out to be a U.S. Congressman, and the Congressman sets his sights on getting Hunt fired. Hunt buys a ranch with Percheron horses and finds a family to run the farm. Disaster strikes when a grizzly bear charges and attacks Hunt. Hunt empties his rifle into the bear, and Hunt ends up lying at the bottom of a cliff with the dead horse and bear on him. Hunt is rushed to the hospital with a crushed skull, broken shoulder, ribs, and a leg.
